Welcome back to school everyone! We hope you had a productive summer and are as excited as we are about the new academic year. Be sure to check this blog frequently throughout the semester for study tips and advice on succeeding in law school.

The start of the academic year is always an interesting time, because it’s an opportunity for each of us to evaluate our progress over the prior months and set new goals for the upcoming term. For our first post of this academic year, we want to encourage you to imagine your ideal professional life. Think about your long-term career goals and professional ambitions in a very detailed way. What will you have accomplished? What will you be doing? Where will you be working? How often will you be working? What type of people will you be working with? What’s important to you in a career? What’s important to you in in general?

Once you’ve clearly imagined your ideal professional life, start back tracking and thinking about all of the steps you’ll need to take in order to achieve your end goal. You’ll probably realize that in order to achieve your goal you’ll need to start taking certain steps and meeting certain benchmarks right now. And that’s the key point. While you may understand in an abstract way that success requires hard work and determination and effort, clearly articulating your future goals will make you appreciate the importance of making positive choices each day. Achieving your professional goals requires consistent and thoughtful action starting right now. The more you delay your efforts or compromise your steps the more difficult it becomes to meet each benchmark. So go forward this academic year with the intention of starting your journey towards your own definition of success. Think about what type of professional reputation you want to have, and start living that reputation each and every day. Keep your eyes on where you want to be in 10, 20, or 30 years, and make sure each decision you make moves you towards achieving those goals.

Every law student will face challenges and stressful events during their law school career. Remembering your ultimate goals and strategically working towards those goals each day can help you stay focused and push through the difficult periods. Writer and activist Henry David Thoreau believed that a person must “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined.” At the start of this year, we encourage you to imagine what your professional dreams are, and start living that life right now.

Best of luck to all our students this year. Please come say hello to us in Suite 315.
